Does the character count include spaces?
Both are shown separately — character count with spaces included, and a second count with spaces stripped out — since different limits (like social media character caps) can mean either one.
How does it decide where one sentence ends and the next begins?
Sentence counting looks for standard sentence-ending punctuation (., !, ?). Text with a lot of abbreviations or unconventional punctuation can occasionally throw the count off by a sentence or two, same as most simple sentence counters.
